Complimentary Shipping On Original Paintings & Archival Pigmented Prints In The US
I started the Darkhorse Series in 2013. It will be complete when I have painted 25 original paintings to honor the 25 fallen Marines and the 200 who were critically wounded in Afghanistan in 2010-2011. One of my dear friends, a Blue Star Marine Mother e-mailed me a NPR story, "An Afghan Hell On Earth For The Darkhorse Marines" by Tom Bowman ( Oct 2013 ) about the sacrifices and bravery that this Marine unit suffered. I was deeply touched and inspired to create a painting as a tribute to them titled, 3rd 5th Battalion, Darkhorse #1. The 3/5 received their nickname from the radio call sign that originated from one of its commanders, Col Robert Taplett from the Korean War. It remains their call sign today to pay homage to the Marines bravery in Korea. One of the reasons my friend sent me this story, her son was serving in this unit and at the time I was working in my studio in Colorado focusing on painting horses, my equine alchemy paintings. After I completed the first Darkhorse painting, my friend suggested that I paint 25 original paintings. This is the short story of how my journey started with these paintings. It has brought me new friendships with veterans, Gold Star parents, people who want to help and support our military and many other people who have suffered great loss. Out of this loss, a retreat for veterans is under way in Tennessee, the Darkhorse Lodge. Started by Gold Star parents, The Catherwoods who lost their 19 year old son, LCpl Alec E Catherwood. I use this series to help raise money to help build and support the Darkhorse Lodge. I organize and hold a Darkhorse Exhibition in Dallas every other year. I present and sell new original paintings to collectors. As of 2019, I have painted 12 originals. I have 12 more to paint over my lifetime. They take a very long time to paint.
